“ One of the best places to eat seafood in the #MyrtleBeach area! I've been seafoodin' here since I's a youngin'. Their quaint dining room, all of its appointments an furniture hasn't changed, it seems, in 40+ years. That's ok, it doesn't really need to. It's pretty cool to step back in time 'an remember back to when I was a kid an' the fun we had on family vacations in Myrtle Beach with my mom, dad an' siblings. The ambiance an' vibe is really nostalgic, comforting. The food t'night was really good save the less than warm entree of Stuffed Salmon w/cream sauce, it was one of the specials an' probably been setting for a bit. We did get there later than normal. Other than that the food was perfect. In typical older southern seafood restaurants they'll bring baskets of hush puppies to your table for everybody to nosh. Captain John's is no different. Their version is a sweet, but not to sweet, pinky sized delicious corn fritter that comes with house-made honey-butter that is heaven! The clam-chowder is as good as you'll find anywhere here at the beach. For me, their signature item is their pan fried shrimp that is the best shrimp dinner around without comparison. It's prepared:fried Calabash style (fried with very little breading). All the portions are ample an' will you up. The service was really good and they didn't seem to be as hampered by the lack of help as other places we've been to. I didn't pay attention to the bill as I'm on vacation...LOL!!! For however long as I visit Myrtle Beach, I will always make the short trip to Calabash, NC to visit Captain John's. There's something about walkin' in an' settin' down in that dining room that makes ya feel like you're a kid again with your folks eatin' out at the beach. ”
“ Reviews are mixed here but decided to give them a try due to their history in the area. I'm glad I did! I tried the pan fried shrimp. I loved the batter they used and the shrimp were large! It was very good. I'm looking forward to trying other items on their menu. ”
“ Well folks, it's the end of the season, so they only have 6 waitresses. We wanted to eat outside but unfortunately they didn't have enough workers. We were told our wait would be about 25 minutes at the most on a Tuesday evening. However we were seated in probably 5-10 minutes. They have a cute bar area that displays drink specials. The dining areas are very open and on the louder side. The chairs are wooden and somewhat uncomfortable. We had larger members in our party who were not comfortable sitting. The tables and floors were clean. I ordered a Mai Tai, which was $6. It came professionally garnished and tasted pretty strong. I felt like I got my money worth. The onion ringer were crispy and good! The hush puppies were just ok, I prefer the round ones with onions in them. My entree was the marinated chicken, which was blackened. It came with steamed veggies, toasted bread, grilled pineapple, and a baked potato. It was sooooo good! 10/10 and definitely a great option if you're tired of all the deep fried seafood. The grilled pineapple was perfect. The French fries were crispy and seasoned well. The baked potatoes were cooked all the way through. The fried catfish and shrimp were "perfect" per my grandparents. The big entree salads were "excellent" per my dad and sister. The crab cakes were "ok - dry and the stuffing wasn't very good" per my mother. We had food to take home! The service was slightly slow, but she was very polite and helped us with the menu. We had a disabled veteran in our party, and they have us a discount, which was much appreciated. Many of the restaurants in the area only give discounts for active. After dinner we walked out on the doc behind the restaurant. Beautiful view. Overall, the food was 5/5, and the environment/service was 3/5 - so I gave 4 stars ”
“ Went with my wife, and we each had a different platter. I have a mixed Calabash-Style meal consisting of clam strips, flounder, and shrimp along with a baked potato. Everything was excellent. The plate was piled high and was a challenge to eat it all (I could not). My wife had fantail shrimp, the larger size (14 jumbos) and she could not finish hers, either. Hers came with French fries and she enjoyed everything, too. There was a basket of hush puppies and we really liked them! We went to Captain John's on a Saturday night (Memorial Day Weekend), and expected a busy crowd. We waited in the bar area for about 20 minutes before we were seated. Our waitress did a wonderful job and added to our overall enjoyment. We'll go back sometime in the future. ”
“ Stopped in for seafood. Ordered the calamari appetizer and shrimp cocktail as my meal. My husband ordered the raw oysters as his appetizer. When they came out the shrimp was fresh and chilled and cooked to perfection. Cocktail sauce had a little heat which was nice. His oysters were plentiful, no grit. My husband got the scallops as his entree. OMG they were incredible. My calamari was a huge serving. I took more than half home. Much more than one person could eat. A house salad was just that, fresh and crisp. I would eat there again. ”
